LLS Donations Will Be Matched Until Dec. 31st

Dear Friend of LLS,

I write today with the good news that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has received a research challenge grant.

An anonymous friend of LLS will match $100,000 in donations made by December 31st to support an important research focus - to reduce the long-term and late effects of some of today's intensive treatments.

Cure rates for many blood cancer patients have improved dramatically in past decades. But harsh treatments that save lives can come with a cost. Too many cancer survivors experience long-term negative effects from their treatments. Some are chronic conditions that affect quality of life. Others, which might occur years later, can be life threatening.

What patients need now is for current therapies to be made less harmful without sacrificing their effectiveness. This matching challenge will help accomplish that.

Please take advantage of this challenge and double the impact of your gift by December 31st.  Your donation of $25 will become $50; your gift of $50 will become $100.  Whatever you give will go twice as far. Don't miss this chance to make a gift.

Thank you again for your valued support.

Best of health,
John E. Walter

Nike Women's Marathon 2009

Yesterday I went and cheered for two of my friends at the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco.  The two of these girls raised money in honor of Paul Ruel as well.  Between the three of us over the last two years we've raised over $13,000. That is hard to wrap my brain around sometimes.

When you run a race, one of the best parts is reading all the signs or seeing what spectators will do to grab your attention.  The Nike benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, so there are A LOT of people running in honor of people with blood cancers, and people just simply thanking you for running.  The Nike has a special place in my heart and always will.  This was my favorite sign yesterday.

Congratulations Cherise and Alexandra!  You guys rocked it!

Giving Blood For the 1st Time

Sure, you've probably given blood before, but its difficult for some.  I've always had a hard time with needles, incisions, blood etc. and so has my brother.  I only joined the bone marrow registry set on on the fact that I would over come this fear.  I had to get blood work done twice this year and when i went, I just tried to focus on my music, never once looking down.  It seemed to work for the most part so I finally decided to make my donation appointment.  Last Thursday, I went in and didn't even break a sweat.  Next step platelets.  I have to get comfortable with this kind of thing for the chance that I ever get that phone call from the bone marrow registry saying "you are a match, will you donate?"  If you ever have to get a bone marrow transplant, there is less than a 30% chance of someone being a match in your family.  If you have an opportunity to be someone's miracle, wouldn't you conquer your fears to make it possible?  I know on a personal level how valuable blood, platelets and marrow can be to someone, so I have to do this.  I have to do it for Paul.

TRI Pix Are In!!!

Thanks for all your warm thoughts and donations!  The triathlon couldn't have gone any smoother.  I expected to finish between 3.5 hrs to 4.5 hrs, but actually finished in 3:25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  So I couldn't be any happier about my time.  I also raised over $4,000 to fight blood cancers!!!! Which is still hard to believe.  Overall, it was an amazing experience and I couldn't have done it with out friends and family like you guys to support me.  So thanks for being a part of the experience and helping slap cancer in the face!  My tri team raised over $260,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Go team!

The swim picture is my wave taking off...I'm in there somewhere.  56 degree water and lots of kelp :)  They put me in the pink wave and I would have been thrilled to be any other color.

ONE WEEK AWAY!!! This video is dedicated to none other than Paul "I slapped cancer in the face....twice" Ruel

A week from now I will be in Monterey carb loading and mentally prepping myself for the race.  Its officially only a week a way....crazy.  I got my race jersey yesterday, and the nerves have begun to set in a liiiiitle bit for my first triathlon.

So in the name of kicking cancer's butt in honor of Paul, I dedicate this video to him.  Every time I hear a Red Hot Chili Pepper's (RHCP) song I think of him, so it is only appropriate.  If you did not know Paul, he was the biggest RHCP fan.  During his second bout of Leukemia I brought him the biggest RHCP poster I could find to decorate his hospital room.  The morning of the Nike Women's Marathon last year, Alexandra (my other friend who races in honor of Paul) and I woke up and turned on the radio to get us pumped up while getting ready at 6:30 A.M.  I kid you not, the first clear song that came in on that horrible alarm clock radio was nothing other than a RHCP song.  So much for getting pumped up, Alexandra and I just started crying because we knew Paul was there. :) Honestly though, it was really comforting knowing he was with us every step of that 26.2/13.1 mi. race.  We NEEDED the support.

So here is to you Paul, to the second race season that has gone by since you've joined the party in heaven.  May you be with us every mile :)

Your donations truly are powerful and have proven to add on years to the lives of patients with blood cancers just like my friend Paul.  The question I repeatedly find myself asking since the day Paul died, is "If I had the chance to extend the lives of other peoples loved ones, to what extent would I go to make it happen?"  Team In Training/The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) provides an outlet for me to help keep your loved ones around longer.  This read really shows how powerful the LLS has been over the last 20 years in advancing the treatments of blood cancer patients.  Our fundraising DOES have an impact on peoples lives.  We are not just finding cures, but also advancing treatments.  Your donations matter.

I Will Carry You

One of the things I often shared last year was music that reminded me of Paul because music was a huge part of Paul's life.  Sorry for my slackin' this year.  You can expect some Red Hot Chili Peppers soon.

Anyways, I came across this song this week called "Carry You" by Dispatch.  It's short, there's not a whole lot to it, but I think it is a beautiful and powerful song about being there for someone when they need you.  Paul was one of my few friends where if I went to him with the lamest problems, he would get fired up with me and tell me I was right (even if I was wrong).  This isn't always the type of friend you need when it comes to finding logical solutions, but sometimes you just need a little loyalty and someone to validate what you are feeling.....even if it doesn't make sense.

To Paul,

Thanks for all the problems you carried me through.  Big or small, you were there, and I really appreciate your steadfast loyalty.  As much as you were surrounded with friends and family through your biggest battle in life, ultimately God was the only one strong enough to carry you through.  I'm so happy you are no longer in pain and probably causing a ruckus up in heaven.  I love you and miss you terribly.
